Text: Luke 19:1-10
“...Truly I understand that God shows no partiality”.
This is a statement from Peter when God saved the house Cornelius and poured His spirit on them - Acts 10:34.
Zacchaeus who was a republican, had a higher social status as a chief tax collector. The Bible also described him as a rich man. His wealth and social reputation as a chief tax collector was undermined by the Jews because he took money (taxes) from them to the Roman government and may have dumped the tax payers in his line of work. In this regard, the Jews saw him and other tax collectors as sinners and unworthy of association with God’s people.
Irrespective of the prejudice levelled against Zacchaeus, the hear sayings and knowledge of Jesus Christ has got to him and wish to have an encounter with him. His smaller stature did not become a hindrance for him to climb a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus. His zealousness to see and welcome Jesus into his home usher him into in new whole life of salvation. “Today salvation has come to this house,” said Jesus to Zacchaeus. This is a mission accomplished. Zacchaeus willful and repented heart have won him the ultimate prize of salvation.
Yes, indeed “...Truly I understand that God shows no partiality” “…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.” Readers of today’s lessons from Zacchaeus encounter with Jesus Christ, need to understand that - 1. Our sins are not justification to constantly sin. Jesus is here to wash you and make you clean from all iniquities. Acts 2:38; 22:16; I Peter 3:21. 2. A well prepared heart welcomes the word of God irrespective of challenges - Romans 10:10, 17; John 8:31; James 1:21 3. Acknowledge Jesus Christ as the only one to save you from your sins - John 3:16 4. Do not be proud to change from your ways - Luke 14:11; Galatians 6:3; Jeremiah 13:15; Romans 11:18; James 4:6, 4. 5. Be prepared to make things right - Galatians 6:9. God bless us all as we strive to live by His word to the glorification of His name. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
